Modal Jazz
Modal
Jazz. The quartet’s improvisational and experimental skills are
clearly heard on the Glencraig CD, which in essence is a modal jam. We
take the modes (scales) of various cultures such as Japan, Hungary, etc
as well as our ancient church modes and use them as a vehicle for improvisation.
In this form of improvising each musician has to listen clearly, to “know”
the other players, to be sympathetic, intuitive, and have a vision of
the collective piece. This makes it a marvellous musical experience for
all. In many ways when we play at very loud Drum and Bass gigs we adapt
this process of music making but in that genre. Because D&B has stylized
aspects for the bass part and the drum part it leaves a lot of creative
space for keyboards and woodwind.
