The Recording

This is the cathedral in the historic cathedral city of Downpatrick. It was here that Mark and Harry were recorded by Max Buckingham in the Sacred site duets on Organ and Clairnets / Saxaphones. The Balance of sounds within the organ and between it and the horn is very subtle. The recording was done using a single large diaphram microphone directly into a real to real tape machine. This makes the purest analogue siginal path we could manage (or is managable) There was a stereo DAT recording as backup however it is clear that the extended headroom that the analog setup gave us was a clear advantage when recording such a huge dynamic range.

About the catherdral

"One of Ireland's earliest places of Christian worship and closely associated with St Patrick, Downpatrick Cathedral has a turbulent history. Destroyed by earthquake, pillaged by the Vikings, burnt by the Scots, destroyed again by the English, it lay in ruins for more than 200 years before being restored in the early part of this century. A stone believed to mark the site of St. Patrick's grave can be seen in the grounds."
